OWECC-L Executive Director Urges Greater Support for Civil War Victims, Receives Integrity Personality Award

The Executive Director of the Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia (OWECC-L), Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu (Prof.), has called on the Government of Liberia to make support for Liberia’s civil war victims and survivors a national priority by allocating adequate resources to assist survivors who continue to bear the physical, emotional, and economic scars of the conflict.

Speaking on Thursday after being honored as Integrity Personality of the Year 2025/2026 by the West Africa Media Network of Liberia, Dr. Barbu emphasized that caring for victims must go hand in hand with the country's pursuit of justice and accountability.

“Considering the creation of a reparation funding mechanism is a step that will go a long way in addressing the present condition of victims and survivors and war-ravaged communities”, Dr. Barbu is quoted as saying.

He stressed that Liberia has a compelling national interest in confronting the legacy of its civil wars, noting that genuine accountability is critical to ending impunity, promoting reconciliation, and preventing future atrocities.

According to Dr. Barbu, the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court represents a historic opportunity for Liberia to address past abuses and strengthen the rule of law. He urged all Liberians to support the government's efforts to establish the court, describing it as an important step toward lasting peace and national healing.

Presenting the award, the Executive Director of the West Africa Media Network of Liberia, Prince Grandoe, said the recognition was in appreciation of Dr. Barbu's unwavering commitment to Liberia's development, his distinguished service to the nation, and his demonstrated integrity and patriotism.

Mr. Grandoe noted that since assuming leadership of OWECC-L, Dr. Barbu has brought a renewed culture of transparency, accountability, and integrity to the institution. He said these qualities have earned him widespread admiration and confidence among Liberians.

The award recognizes Dr. Barbu's leadership and his continued efforts to advance transitional justice, promote accountability, and support initiatives aimed at ensuring justice for victims while strengthening democratic governance in Liberia.
