OWECC-L Boss Urges Justice as Foundation for Genuine National Unity

At the 62nd National Unification Day Dialogue in Monrovia, the Executive Director of the Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia (OWECC-L), Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, delivered a compelling goodwill message, stressing that Liberia cannot achieve genuine national unity without justice, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

During the ceremony held at the auditorium of the University of Liberia, Dr. Cllr. Barbu reminded participants that the wounds of Liberia’s civil conflict still linger, and unresolved grievances continue to threaten peace and stability.

The 62nd National Unification Day Dialogue, held on Tuesday at the University of Liberia auditorium on Capitol Hill, brought together government officials, diplomats, civil society actors, students, and national stakeholders for a day of reflection on Liberia’s past, present, and democratic future.

Speaking on the theme, “National Unification, Justice, and the Future of Liberia,” the Executive Director of the Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia (OWECC-L) delivered a powerful goodwill message emphasizing the inseparable link between national unity, justice, and sustainable peace.

The dialogue was organized by the Better Future Foundation, which was commended for its consistent efforts in promoting civic engagement and national discourse on critical governance issues.

He emphasized that true unification must go beyond symbolism and be rooted in fairness, equality, and institutional integrity.

Cllr. Barbu reaffirmed that the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court, mandated under Executive Order No. 164, is a national necessity rather than an act of revenge.

He argued that accountability is essential to healing victims, deterring future violence, and strengthening Liberia’s democracy.

The Executive Director further noted that corruption and economic crimes negatively affect everyday Liberians, including market women, students, and vulnerable communities.

He praised the Better Future Foundation for its continued leadership in national dialogue and encouraged Liberia’s youth and academia to champion integrity, reject tribalism, and help build a just society.

Cllr. Barbu concluded by calling for stronger collaboration among government institutions, civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and international partners to ensure a peaceful, united, and accountable Liberia.
