The National Muslim Council of Liberia (NMCL) is the main umbrella organization representing Muslims and Islamic institutions across Liberia. Founded in 1974, the Council coordinates Islamic affairs, promotes religious education, supports community development, and advocates for the welfare and rights of Muslims in the country.
NMCL works with mosques, Islamic schools, scholars, and Muslim organizations nationwide to promote unity, peacebuilding, interfaith cooperation, and national development. The Council has also played an important role in Liberia’s peace and reconciliation efforts, including collaboration with the Liberia Council of Churches during the civil war through interfaith mediation initiatives.
The organization is also involved in advocacy on issues affecting Liberia’s Muslim community, including education, religious freedom, recognition of Islamic holidays, and youth empowerment.
