The Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) is a women-led peacebuilding initiative under the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP). It was established in 2001 to strengthen the role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, mediation, and post-conflict reconstruction across West Africa.
In Liberia, WIPNET became internationally recognized for leading the historic Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace during the civil war in 2003. The movement brought together Christian and Muslim women in nonviolent protests that pressured warring factions into peace negotiations, contributing significantly to the end of the conflict.
WIPNET also supports community peace initiatives such as “Peace Huts,” where women mediate disputes, promote reconciliation, advocate against gender-based violence, and encourage women’s participation in governance and transitional justice processes in Liberia.
