As part of its ongoing efforts to
increase public awareness and understanding of Liberia’s transitional justice
process, the Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court
(OWECC) has erected a major public information billboard in the Township of
West Point, Montserrado County.
The billboard carries messages
highlighting transitional justice and providing information on the proposed
establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC) and the National
Anti-Corruption Court (NACC).
The initiative forms part of OWECC-L’s
broader public outreach strategy aimed at ensuring that communities across
Liberia are informed and included in discussions surrounding accountability,
justice, reconciliation, and the fight against corruption.
Residents of West Point welcomed the billboard, describing the initiative as a demonstration of inclusion in the national process.
Community members said placing the
information in a highly populated community such as West Point would help make
information about transitional justice and the proposed courts more accessible
to ordinary citizens, particularly young people and other community
stakeholders.
Speaking earlier, the Executive Director of OWECC-L, Dr. Cllr. Jallah Barbu emphasized the importance of taking information about the transitional justice process directly to communities.
Dr. Barbu also stressed that public
participation and awareness are essential to building confidence and ensuring
that Liberians understand the purpose and significance of the proposed
accountability mechanisms.
OWECC-L says it will continue to
expand its public awareness initiatives through billboards, community
engagements, media programs, and other communication platforms.
The Office encourages citizens to stay informed, participate constructively in the national dialogue, and support efforts to promote accountability, justice, reconciliation, and
the rule of law in Liberia.
