The Virginia Declaration, adopted on June 19, 2009, at the National Conference on Reconciliation in Liberia, presents recommendations for achieving lasting peace, justice, accountability, and national healing following the country’s civil conflicts. It calls for the prosecution of individuals responsible for serious crimes, the establishment of a competent court, reparations and support for victims, and reforms to strengthen human rights, governance, and reconciliation. The declaration also urges the Government of Liberia, implementing institutions, and citizens to work together to ensure the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations and build a peaceful, united Liberia.
